I am often asked what pieces I think are the best to invest in and can create a good base for your closet year-round. Although I don’t wear your typical denim often, I would still have to say that denim pieces are certainly a great base and starting point for many outfits and often the most transitional pieces. And they can be super cute too!
What comes to mind when you hear the word “denim”? Most of us would think jeans, maybe a jacket. But I’ve found some really cute different ways to wear denim that I think might change how you see this somewhat “typical” and “generic” fabric. Here are a few tips and styled ideas and inspiration for you the next time you want to dress up your denim pieces and a few of my favorite denim pieces I feel are super staples and great for transitioning between seasons)…

DIFFERENT WAYS TO WEAR DENIM
1. DENIM PAPERBAG SHORTS
A pair of denim paperbag shorts elevate your standard denim short idea and give it some extra pazazz! Something high-waisted is always a flattering fit, and if you can find denim in a different color, such as white, then you can often match it in with more blouse options too. Blue on blue denim is always something I try to steer clear of, but I love how this sweet blue top really pops due to the crisp white color of the denim shorts. A super adorable way to feel cute, but comfortable and great for everyday wear.

2. DENIM OVERALL DRESS
Here’s a rare photo of my in my blue jeans. Well, in the color “blue jean” – haha. I love the idea of creating the same kind of interest as a cute top and jeans, but instead with the idea of a denim overall dress with a pretty top. This allows me to wear those shorter cropped type blouses, instead of worrying about showing off my stomach, by simply hiding it under a cute pair of overalls. Endless opportunities here for styling your overalls, match them with cute sweaters, bodysuits, crop tops and basic tees! Dress it up with some wedges and a pretty headband, or down with some sneakers and a top knot!
Tip: Choose your top based on the sleeves and remember which parts will be covered by the overall dress (avoid too many buttons or bows in hidden areas which may make the outfit uncomfortable).

3. COLORED DENIM JEANS
I am a sucker for colored denim. I find it so refreshing! Although I do own some basic blue jeans and other staple denims, I love it when there is the option to purchase jeans in a pretty pastel color. The fit of these wide-leg high-waisted jeans are flattering enough on their own, but when found in a pretty pink they immediately elevate any look! I love the simple idea of changing out your favorite denim pieces for colored versions. It’ll give you a whole new, fresh look!

4. PUFF SLEEVE DENIM JACKET
You’ve probably noticed I wear a lot of dresses and tops with puff sleeves. I am drawn to this pretty feminine style and jackets are no different! A cute cropped denim jacket is a great way to keep your outfit cute and fun, while still being practical. I love this one, as it works over most of my dresses that have puff sleeves, it’s roomy and comfortable to wear over something. Easy to dress up or down! I know this one isn’t really a different way to wear denim, but it’s a nice new take on the classic denim jacket!
